Spotlight on insecticides

Viticulture

grape crop with insect damage

While viticulturalists will be familiar with the Syngenta fungicide portfolio, including SWITCH®, THIOVIT® Jet and REVUS®, our insecticides range is just as valuable. Depending on the pest spectrum growers can choose either PROCLAIM® Opti and/or VOLIAM TARGO® to manage a range of pests including light brown apple moth (LBAM), grapevine moth, garden weevil, and mites.

PROCLAIM® Opti insecticide is active on all feeding instar stages of LBAM and grapevine moth, working quickly to paralyze the insect, preventing any further damage or movement of botrytis spores around your valuable bunches. The insect often takes up to a week to die and fall off the plant. You've got to be careful with your monitoring; don't expect to walk out there the day after an application and see all the caterpillars gone. While providing excellent control of caterpillars, PROCLAIM® Opti also has a good beneficial insect profile, particularly with green lacewings (Mallada signatus) which are an important, generalist predator that feed on many small insects including moth eggs and caterpillars.

VOLIAM TARGO® insecticide provides control of LBAM, grapevine moth and mites, as well as suppression of garden weevil. Like PROCLAIM® Opti, it is fast-acting with a good beneficial insect profile. VOLIAM TARGO® can be used to EL-29 for export wine and for domestic consumption it has a 28-day withholding period

PROCLAIM® Opti is the insecticide of choice in vines except where mites or garden weevils are present, where VOLIAM TARGO® would be your go-to product.

Choosing the right insecticide to use in any situation will depend on a range of factors, the pest spectrum, the development stage of the insect and the numbers present, any beneficial species present and the impact the insecticide may have on them, and the withholding period, which may vary for export or domestic consumption. Ensuring you are also considering resistance management by understanding the chemical groups and rotating chemical groups with each application, is also important to ensure the longevity of these products into the future.
