Have you heard the latest tips, tricks and industry advice? Vine Talk author, Dr Brandy (Belinda) Rawnsley takes a look at the issues facing grape growers.

You know your vines, you know your spray program and you know what works, when. But with newly registered products, product restrictions, changing market restrictions and use patterns of existing products changing, it can be challenging to stay up-to-date.

AMISTAR® 250SC has been registered for use in grapes since the mid-1990s. Over recent years it has seen greater adoption due to the value of controlling the three key diseases with one pass; powdery mildew, downy mildew and botrytis.  The label had, however, prevented growers from using AMISTAR® 250SC alone at key infection times like 80% capfall for botrytis control. You now can.

New research reviewed the effectiveness of AMISTAR® 250SC as a stand-alone botryticide. These trial results proved AMISTAR® 250SC is a very effective botryticide on its own, without the need for a mixing partner. With this data, the APVMA has approved the label change allowing AAMISTAR® 250SC to be used alone for control of botrytis at critical times such as 80% capfall.

AMISTAR® 250SC is a high-quality formulation that contains an adjuvant to assist coverage and penetration over the critical flowering or early fruit development period. AMISTAR® 250SC remains the first choice for growers who want reliable disease control of powdery mildew, downy mildew and botrytis, all with the quality assurance and technical support that Syngenta is known for.

MIRAVIS® (active ingredient pydiflumetofen) has also had changes to the label. You can now use consecutive applications of MIRAVIS® when applied as a tank-mix or co-formulant. THIOVIT® JET sulphur, with multi-site mode of action, is the perfect, best value tank-mixing partner with MIRAVIS®.

With application restrictions being placed on mancozeb, products containing mancozeb (e.g. RIDOMIL® GOLD MZ) are restricted to a maximum of three applications per season and can be used no later than E-L 31, berries peasize (not > 7 mm).
RIDOMIL GOLD® Plus (metalaxyl + copper) still provides excellent control of downy mildew when used no later than 30 days before harvest.

Botrytis, powdery mildew and downy mildew are the key target diseases for any spray program. Consider your product choice each year, review the current label, either on company websites or the APVMA website, and tailor the best fit according to current guidelines and recommendations.
