Tackling rhizoctonia head on

Andy Stewart of Derneveagh Pastoral Company at Harden, New South Wales is relieved to have found a solution to a significant and long term rhizoctonia problem on his farm.

Andy grew up on and has been farming at Derneveagh for over 40 years. Growing mainly wheat, canola and triticale in this high rainfall zone, regularly achieving high average yields.

However, Andy has been grappling with the issue of rhizoctonia severely reducing his yield in patches, particularly in the later sown cereals on south facing paddocks for decades.

Rhizoctonia causes crop damage by pruning the root system, which results in water and nutrient stress to the plant. Across the paddock, chronic effects of rhizoctonia reduce plant yield, and in more severe areas ‘bare patches’ develop with no yield at all.

“Last season we had our fertilizer treated with UNIFORM® last season through the Delta Agribusiness fertilizer facility near Young, in an effort to find a solution to the rhizoctonia issue,” Andy said.

UNIFORM provides the only control of rhizoctonia in Australian wheat and barley crops. It also controls pythium root rot and in wheat provides control of stripe rust and suppresses yellow spot. In barley, UNIFORM controls rhizoctonia, pythium, leaf rust and suppression of both forms of net blotch, and powdery mildew.

“We’ve observed great results in the UNIFORM treated paddocks.”

“Our yields have increased as the rhizoctonia patches have decreased,” he said.

“This coming season we are looking to again include UNIFORM in our cereal cropping program, keeping our focus on those problem areas.”

“After trialing UNIFORM last year on a large scale, I’m confident that it is the best product available to tackle rhizoctonia issues and it ensures yields are maximised when disease pressure is constant,” he said.
