Stand with the land: What Australians really think about farming
On Friday 21 November 2025, Australia celebrates National Agriculture Day – a moment to recognise the farmers who feed and clothe us, steward over half our continent, and generate close to $90 billion for our economy each year.
This year's theme, Stand with the Land, is a call to action. And the timing couldn't be more important.
To mark the day, Syngenta ANZ commissioned research into public awareness and understanding of modern farming. The findings revealed a gap: Australians deeply value farmers, but don't fully understand how food is actually produced.
The Key Findings:
- 1 in 2 Australians don't feel informed about where their food comes from
- 64% want to know more about how it's grown
- 87% agree farmers are protectors of the environment
- 50% support farmers using more technology if it lifts production and keeps food affordable
"The research we've done for National Ag Day shows something important: Australians genuinely respect what farmers do," said David Van Ryswyk, Managing Director, Syngenta ANZ. "They recognise farmers are looking after the land, not just producing food – and they understand that in a changing climate, access to the right technology isn't optional, it's essential."
These results tell an important story. Australians recognise that farmers are environmental custodians. They understand the pressures – drought, floods, rising costs, climate volatility – and they're open to innovation that helps farmers stay competitive and sustainable.
Our farmers produce more than 10% of Australia's exports and employ thousands across food, fibre, processing and exporting industries. As custodians of vast land and water resources, they're constantly seeking new technology and management techniques to adapt to a changing climate.
