Media Statement on the APVMA’s Final Decision on Paraquat and Diquat

On 23 June 2026, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) published its final decisions on the reconsideration of paraquat and diquat.

Syngenta acknowledges the APVMA's final decision regarding the continued registration of paraquat and diquat herbicide products in Australia.

Paraquat has played a unique and important role in Australian agriculture. Many farmers consider it an essential tool for conservation agriculture and integrated weed management – helping prevent soil erosion, preserve soil health, reduce labour demands, and protect key crops including wheat, canola, corn and cotton from invasive weeds. Extensive long-term field studies confirm that normal use of paraquat in accordance with clear label instructions does not cause an unacceptable environmental impact.

With a significant number of crop use cases removed from the label as part of this decision, Syngenta is assessing the impact on the product portfolio under these highly restricted conditions.

Syngenta is committed to working with growers, distributors and industry bodies to ensure the changes to label instructions are clearly understood and that any transition is managed responsibly.
