Thinking about spraying sulphur to control powdery mildew? Not all products are created equal
Some products are more user friendly than others, while others are a real headache.
Lumpiness, insolubility and contamination with foreign objects. Cheap sulphur products have dogged some grape growers in recent years.
The consequences of dealing with these inferior products has unfortunately far outweighed any initial cost saving.
The success of a quality product like THIOVIT JET® is no accident. Being a micronized sulphur formulation, it is the user-friendly pick of the bunch.
“THIOVIT JET is a micro granular sulphur that has some unique properties, one of them being the particle size,” Syngenta Senior Technical Services Lead Scott Mathew said.
“The average particle size is four micron, this is the optimum size for crop safety and product performance.”

Early season control is critical to prevent the spread damage arising from powdery mildew and spraying should take place from budburst onwards.
Powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) is a widespread and damaging disease that can infect all green tissue of the vine including leaves, stems and fruit. If left uncontrolled from budburst powdery mildew can spread rapidly through the vineyard causing serious disease and crop losses on susceptible varieties.
It is important that sprays are not missed during this period and that good spray coverage is achieved. It’s also important to remember that any formulation is only as good as its application; this means it must be applied at the correct rate, with good coverage and applied at the correct interval. Most often when poor powdery mildew control is seen in the vineyard it is as the result of less than adequate coverage or the interval between sprays was too great.
“THIOVIT JET has some unique properties, one of them is great dispersion characteristics,” Scott said.
“It can be poured straight into the top of the tank when the spray tank is around 25% full and disperses rapidly and readily throughout the solution.
“The other benefit is THIOVIT JET can be volumetrically measured: Five litres equals five kilograms, so there’s no need to pull out those old scales.”
THIOVIT JET can be applied to wine grapevines from budburst onwards, at rates ranging from 200 to 600 g/100 L (for dilute spraying). Growers should use rates at the upper end of the rate range when disease pressure is high or a higher degree of control is required.
